I typed a little more to this story one night awhile ago, hit "submit" and somehow lost it. Trying again:

I got to see Sharyn a few weeks ago at the Kentucky Book Fair, an event held every year to promote new authors and raise money for Kentucky school librarys.

When I walked up to her booth, she was talking with a guy about a new project she is working on. I didn't catch all that was said, but as she was telling him about it, she picked up her tote bag with Dale Earnhardt logo and pointed....said something about releasing the work right before the Daytona 500. Can't wait to see what this will be, NASCAR is another interest for me and Dale, Jr, Chevy guys in general always catch my eye =)

I wore my DMB t-shirt that day and said to her "see what you have done?" She said Del had gotten the musical talent in the family and she might be in trouble if he decides to write a book ;)

Thanks, Monte Carlo, I peeked into cosmic possum and enjoyed it all..included Peace and Love from All Possums.

Del could sing about Frankie Silver very well..you write the chorus and I'll try a verse..and we'll pitch it..

How about "charlie come home drunk on Christmas Eve" to start? We'll have to throw in the axe sooner or later tho..smile..

Interesting posts here, Monte Carlo, I have read all Ms. McCrumb's work and chatted with her when she came to sign books at my library. I grew up in appalachia, not too far from Del McCoury, but in Tn. I like her idea in one of her books about folks who bridge the gap...know all the folk tales from their greats..and believe them...but also use cell phones and look at DVD's...that we are really 'cosmic possums'...I dunno where she got it,,but I kinda LIKE it...

Yeah, I kinda thought that theory was more fable than fact myself, that the land was actually connected, and a very intelligent high schooler gave me a big argument why it could not be possible...but Ms. McCrumb gives us the story from a geological perspective, there is the same kind of rock running through both mountain ranges...so who knows.

My Scotch-Irish ancestors were very "spooky" about stuff, so....could be some ancient connection there. Wherever it comes from is ok with me :)

Hi Monte Carlo, enjoyed your post. I don't know if there's something 'genetic' that drew me back to this music, but the Appalachian/Irish/Highlands type of music really resonates in my soul, too. I didn't grew up in your part of the country- I grew up in California, tho I was born in Ohio (not too far from KY) I think there is something about those 'ancient tones' that strikes a common memory in many people, tho they're not quite sure what it is exactly. Rock music just doesn't have this effect, thats for sure.

I don't think its that the two land masses were connected so much, as it is that there is a common heritage of Scots/Irish culture and bloodlines in the population. THe tough rugged Scots/Irish immigrants were the ones to try and eke out a living in those hills, and they brought their culture and musical traditions with them- and kept them relatively pure, as they were fairly isolated in the areas in which they settled.

I would love to take a trip out to that part of the country some day, and rediscover my roots.

about how I came to be here. Maybe you won't care, maybe you'll be entertained, but I felt the need for a little "therapy" so please bear with me and read at your own risk.

Growing up in KY, I have heard bluegrass all my life. My parents never cared for it and my dad is downright violently opposed to it, but somehow, it got to me. It was the only thing my poor stupid brother (God rest his soul) and I could listen to together. In my youth, I tried to resist and even still I like MANY kinds of music, but bluegrass is definitely occupying a large portion of space in my collection now and the DMB has the lion's share of the available spots ;)

For a couple of years before 9-11, I had been listening to alternative and hard rock (yes, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, White Zombie) because it was the only thing I could get on the radio in the building where I worked, but for months after 9-11 I could not tolerate the headbanging noise. When I listen to a bit of that now, I find they are still playing the same 2 or 3 dozen songs, so I see I haven't missed much.

My sister bought my brother-in-Law the "Oh Brother.." CD for Christmas '01 and that started a chain reaction.

Shortly after Christmas, I bought my computer and set out in search of some bluegrass to *ahem* download *guilty* and I remembered Del's name from a book I had read by an author named Sharyn McCrumb. Y'all might be interested to see some of her work, especially this one: http://www.sharynmccrumb.com/songcatcher.html

Del sounded familiar to me when I saw his name in her book, I can't remember if it was The Songcatcher or some other. I guess I had heard of him somewhere in my lifetime, but this time it stuck. I found "High On a Mountain" and "Take Me to the Mountains" online and played these and a few others I stumbled across INCESANTLY for months. Then I saw the DMB in the Down from the Mountain Tour and again at IBMA in '02 and I was thoroughly hooked =)

Ms. McCrumb has written several books set in East Tennessee. In one of her books she mentions a theory that folks whose roots are in the mountains have a sort of "homing" instinct, they are inexplicably drawn back to the mountains because the Highlands and Appalachians were connected when the 2 pieces of land were part of the super-continent. My mother's family was from Eastern Kentucky. I've never spent any time in there, I live in Louisville, but maybe it's time for me to go.
